From Prison Guard to Advocate: Why You Should Care About the Harris County District Attorney and Sheriff Race

Hey folks, I'm Durrel Douglas, founder of Houston Justice, and I've got a story that highlights why it's crucial for everyday people like you to pay attention to the upcoming Harris County District Attorney and Sheriff races.

Growing up in Houston, Texas, in South Park, I've seen firsthand the impact of our justice system on communities like mine.  Growing up in the innocent 90’s, I’m part of the last generation of people who played outside before everyone had a device tethered to them.  We played Red light-Green light, we bought cool cups from the candy lady, and times seemed simpler.  After my years on Selinsky street, I got to see what resources were available in other parts of town, and how families were treated differently.  That's why I've dedicated my life to fighting for fairness and change within it.

Life in South Park wasn't easy. I witnessed the disparities in education and opportunities between different neighborhoods, which eventually led to my expulsion from a school meant for aspiring law enforcement professionals.  To keep the story short for this blog, me being expelled from The High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice was one of the best things to happen to me.  It catapulted me into the world of advocacy.  After seeing a billboard advertising positions in the prison, I chose to sign up, starting as a guard and working my way up to becoming a lieutenant.

Working in the prison system opened my eyes to the harsh realities faced by those behind bars. I saw overcrowding, lack of resources, and limited support for rehabilitation. It became clear to me that the system needed reform, prompting me to question my role and advocate for change.

Recognizing the need for systemic change, I left my job in law enforcement to advocate for justice reform. I wanted to ensure that the system treated everyone fairly and provided opportunities for rehabilitation. Teaming up with like-minded individuals, I worked towards implementing new policies and practices that prioritize fairness and rehabilitation.

My journey led me to establish a nonprofit organization, Houston Justice, focused on fighting for fairness in the law. Through education and advocacy efforts, we strive to empower communities and push for meaningful change within the justice system. I firmly believe that everyone deserves a second chance, and I'm committed to ensuring that our laws reflect that belief.

As we approach the Harris County District Attorney and Sheriff races, it's important for all of us to recognize the impact these positions have on our communities. My journey from a prison guard to an advocate for justice reform underscores the importance of citizen engagement in shaping our justice system. Every voice matters, and by coming together, we can work towards a future where fairness and opportunity are accessible to all.

We have the power to influence the platforms of all the candidates in both of these races.

So let's get informed, get involved, and work towards building a brighter and more just future for everyone in Harris County.
